In the Fall of 2006, unusually heavy rain storms destroyed the pool at our Zuni Group Home–much loved by our residents–by lifting the drained pool out of the ground.
The Zuni residents have dearly missed the activity a pool allowed them. Every year they take a quality of life survey. Since 2006, the response to the question "If you could change anything at Zuni, what would it be?" overwhelmingly has been: "There would be a pool."
The pool was a place for recreation, time with friends, and stress relief. Swimming was a favorite way of exercising until 2006. Residents also enjoyed the therapeutic benefits and relaxation in the pool. For wheelchair bound clients, the pool was a place to experience freedom.
And now we have an opportunity to replace the pool!
A team of business and community partners have come together to rebuild the pool, offering donations or steep discounts on labor costs and materials. Even so, we need your help raising $158,000 to cover the remaining costs for the project.
With your help, we can do it!
A gift will enrich their lives and provide an opportunity for them to get to know their neighbors. The town of Zuni is located in Isle of Wright County, where the income is much lower than the national average. As a small community with few outside resources, area citizens will again enjoy access to the Zuni pool, as will residents of other nearby organizations serving adults with intellectual disabilities. Churches and camps will use the pool for special events. It will provide our residents rich opportunities for fellowship. They will laugh and play with others in their community, breaking down barriers and helping neighbors overcome common misunderstandings of people with intellectual disabilities.
This "beach entry" pool will provide easy access to the water for people of all abilities, especially our wheelchair bound residents for whom getting into the old pool was a challenge. It will give them plenty of shallow space to play. Our residents will not only enjoy the pool, they’ll experience better overall health from their time in the water. The benefits of aquatic therapy for people with physical and intellectual disabilities are tremendous.
